There’s no evidence that Steve Jobs looked down on Chinese people. His public statements and actions don’t explicitly show disdain or prejudice toward Chinese individuals or culture.
Jobs was known for his intense focus on perfectionism and quality, which sometimes led to harsh critiques of manufacturing processes, including those in China, where Apple’s products were largely assembled. In Walter Isaacson’s biography Steve Jobs, he’s quoted as praising the speed and efficiency of Chinese factories, like Foxconn, but also expressing frustration with certain aspects of their execution compared to his idealized standards. For example, he pushed for rapid scaling of production in China, leveraging its workforce and infrastructure, but was critical when quality control didn’t meet his expectations. These critiques were more about operational outcomes than the people themselves.
On the flip side, some have speculated about Jobs’ views based on his broader philosophy. He was deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism and Japanese aesthetics, which shaped his design principles. This could suggest a cultural preference for certain East Asian philosophies, but it’s a stretch to say this translated to looking down on Chinese people specifically. He never publicly expressed such sentiments, and Apple’s heavy reliance on Chinese manufacturing—overseen by Jobs—shows a pragmatic respect for the country’s capabilities.
Without concrete evidence, any claim Steve Jobs “looked down” on Chinese people remains speculative.
